Commissioned Work: Old Music New Life
These 5 songs have been specially selected from the Commissioned Works that the Festival of Music bring life to. These songs are usually only sung once by the Festival Choirs, and never again – until now! Here are some of the favourites since 2000, and as we are now 25 years into the 21st Century, let’s celebrate by giving ‘new life’ to some ‘old music’.
Jetman - Take to the Sky Medley
From 2014 “Flight”.
Words and Music by P. Jarman.
Flying is a part of everyday life – people fly all over the world for work and holidays. Yet it wasn’t that long ago that humans only dreamed of flying. What an amazing development in the world’s history – taking to the sky in flight.
Jetman and Take to the Sky have been ‘merged’ together to capture the excitement and fun of both songs from 2014’s commissioned work Flight.
Yves Rossy, the Jetman, made history in 2006 being the first and only man in the history of aviation to fly with a jet-propelled wing, worn as a backpack with small jet engines. NOT in an aeroplane, just a wing!
In Jetman we sing about soaring through the air, the purest way to fly, body mind and spirit are one within the sky.
The second song, Take to the Sky honours the history of flight, from the Greek story of Icarus and Daedalus (figures from Greek mythology), to the Middle East, Asia, Europe, the Americas, Australia, and brings us to today when humans fly to the moon and travel in space.
Take to the Sky is seen through the eyes of a child - imagine finding an old chest in the attic with a leather jacket, gloves and flying goggles inside, that belonged to a great grandparent…. You excitedly put it all on and suddenly are connected to the amazing history of flight!
Speed! Power! Both are needed for this medley of songs…. Fly your dreams…. Take to the Sky….. You are going to love singing this exciting and high energy medley!
