Sing!
Words and Music by M. Grassi, S. Hoying, K. Olusola, M. Johnson, S. Hollander, B. Kaplan and K. Maldonado. Arranged by M. Puddy.
Sing is from the PENTATONIX self-titled debut album, which was released in 2015. Pentatonix is an American a cappella (unaccompanied) group from Texas. They are named after the pentatonic scale – a musical scale with five notes per octave, which represents the five members of the group. They changed the spelling to make it unique. Sing is an upbeat anthem about joy, confidence, and the worldwide unifying power of music. It encourages you to sing out loud, no matter who you are or what others think. The track celebrates singing as a way of overcoming hard times and enjoying the good times, offering the obvious solution to deal with life’s problems … to SING!
Interestingly, this song was originally in our 2020 repertoire, which was the year COVID hit the world, and our concert series was cancelled – so it was never performed in front of an audience
– THIS year we will!!
Lots of the music Pentatonix sing features complicated harmonies, funky basslines, riffs, rapping and beatboxing, which involves the skill of mimicking drum machines using your mouth, lips,
tongue and voice to make the sounds.
